{"id":40154,"date":"2025-01-17T17:32:01","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T22:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.profonanpe.org.pe\/?p=40154"},"modified":"2025-01-17T17:32:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T22:32:01","slug":"peru-to-promote-conservation-in-madre-de-dios-with-integrated-sustainable-management-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/peru-impulsara-la-conservacion-en-madre-de-dios-con-proyecto-de-manejo-integrado-sostenible\/","title":{"rendered":"Peru to promote conservation in Madre de Dios with integrated sustainable management project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: WWF \/ Minam<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initiative is part of the third phase of the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program (ASL), with the objective of addressing key challenges such as the <\/span><b>deforestation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>loss of biodiversity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y <\/span><b>climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, which covers an intervention area of more than 4.7 million hectares in Madre de Dios, prioritizes the protection of five Natural Protected Areas (NPAs), including Alto Pur\u00fas National Park, Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, Tambopata National Reserve, Manu National Park, Bahuaja Sonene National Park, and their buffer zones.  It also seeks to strengthen ecological connectivity and mitigate carbon emissions in this region known as the \u00abBiodiversity Capital of Peru\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Key project strategies<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will generate a transformative impact through an integrated landscape management approach. To this end, it adopts a collaborative, multi-sector and multi-level model, based on four interconnected strategies:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The development and strengthening of enabling policy conditions, governance, and institutional capacities for territorial planning, and monitoring and control of deforestation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The promotion of sustainable production practices in key habitats of standing forests and buffer zones of Natural Protected Areas, and bio-businesses such as ecotourism, agroforestry, fish farming and palm fruits, as an alternative for sustainable development in the landscape, and to facilitate adaptation to climate change by local communities and indigenous peoples.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implementation of actions for the conservation of biodiversity and biological connectivity and the restoration of key ecosystems, contributing to carbon sequestration and the development of ecosystem resilience, and helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change in Madre de Dios.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowledge management, promoting the generation of strategic information for decision making and collaboration between local and national stakeholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>A model of sustainability and participation<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The landscape includes a robust network of Natural Protected Areas (NPAs), indigenous territories and forest resource-based economies, and is noted for possessing one of the largest intact and connected tropical forest biomes in the Peruvian Amazon, offering an exceptional opportunity for long-term conservation of its global environmental values.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project formulation and validation process was developed in a participatory manner between August 2023 and December 2024, with the involvement of the various landscape stakeholders, considering gender, intercultural and intergenerational approaches.
